Lest We Forget

On 15th February 1942, the Allied surrendered in Singapore. The end of one colonial master marks the start of another. With it, thousands of it's young defenders started a hard life never before imagine. The "liberated" had nothing to shout about and as history would show, we were more than happy to welcome our previous masters after 4 years. Many young soldiers lost their life and innocence defending the empire.

Even with independence, we had depended on Allied troops against the communists. Another generation of young troops were sent to the jungles and told to defend democracy.

When Sukarno couldn't tolerate the formation of Malaysia, again we had the assistance of more Allied troops to defend our young nation. The troopers were probably told it's for democracy again and they valiantly stood by us.

This is a dedication to all the Commonweath soldiers that has served in Malaysia, especially the Australian ones, who despite being "not connected" to us, were always there.

"ANDAINYA KITA TERLUPA" - that was the phrase that caught my attention. This picture was taken in Adelaide, at the park behind the Government House

It made me think. Back then they didn't know whether Communisme was such a bad thing. Or that maybe they have no business stopping Sukarno from doing whatever he feels like it. Or why are young troopers sent to defend the plantations and holdings of large British corporation. But they came anyway and they did their business and today we know they did the right thing. Thanks.

So are the Australians, Americans and British doing such a bad thing in Iraq? These issues like the ones we had 50 years ago were always a grey area at the time of event. So do we ask ourselves, after all the self-interests of all parties involved (inclusive of Malaysia), was a greater goodness achieved in Iraq that people would be thankful of 50 years from now??
